Frontier High School/Ben Barber Career Tech School offers multiple trade skills to students of diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. This school was in need of a multi-functional space that would serve the full realm of needs resulting from a varying and unconventional curriculum. With FCI vision – a dark, underutilized space in the school was transformed into a now-popular coffee shop, high-tech study area and all-out amazing “hang-out” for the school’s students.
The FCI design included a variety of zone seating solutions with different styles, colors, functionality and flexibility to accommodate different groups of students:
- Social seating zones were arranged around the parameters of the coffee shop
- Collaborative learning stations with computers were nestled in areas for small group instruction
- Large group instruction areas included half-radius lounge seating and surrounding large surface tables w/seating to create a comfortable atmosphere for speech/lecture
- In order to overcome some structural challenges, FCI integrated wraps and counter seating into the room’s existing columns; balancing out the zones and giving the space a rich, customized feel to enhance the student experience
